These 10 to 12-week internships over the summer holiday give you the opportunity to try out a discipline and see if it’s something you want to do once you graduate.

Nuclear and Marine – Plymouth (Undergraduates studying STEM based degrees)

What you’ll be doing

You will be based in one of our design, safety or facility management offices working with the teams who maintain the facilities at Devonport, Plymouth to support the MoD and Royal Navy.

What you’ll get out of it

Half of the entire Royal Navy surface fleet is based in Devonport, so you’ll spend your summer getting hands-on with some of the world’s most advanced naval technology. You’ll have a variety of different opportunities, working as part of technical departments, project management or production teams.

What you’ll need

  • Studying a STEM degree
  • To be able to satisfy the MoD’s security requirements (you may need to complete a medical assessment)

Nuclear - Bristol (Undergraduates studying STEM based degrees)

What you’ll be doing

You will be based in one of our design, safety or facility management offices working with the teams who maintain the facilities at Devonport, Plymouth to support the MoD and Royal Navy.

What you’ll be doing

As part of the Marine sector, our 1,300-strong business based out of Clyde designs, integrates and supports some of the most complex systems. As the Ministry of Defence’s commercial partner at HMNB Clyde, we deliver vital in-service engineering support.

What you’ll get out of it

A summer placement will give you the opportunity to put theory into practice and gain vital work experience and understanding of operations at Clyde. You can expect to receive an overview of all aspects of engineering, including design and safety, fleet planning and fleet production. You will have opportunities to work on projects in business operations, maintenance planning, safety cases and business improvements.

What you’ll need

  • Studying a relevant a degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, preferably accredited
  • In Year 3 or above of your studies
  • To be able to satisfy the MoD’s security requirements (you may need to complete a medical assessment)

What you’ll be doing

Marine – Energy and Marine – Rosyth (Electrical)

What you’ll be doing

At our Rosyth site, we’re specialists in the design and engineering of complex marine platforms, as well as the lead contractor for the UK Submarine Dismantling Programme. We are also world leaders in the development and supply of Gas Systems. You could be involved in any of these extraordinary engineering projects or you may get involved in something completely new. As long as you are bursting with ideas and enthusiasm, we’ll have something for you to get your teeth into.

During the summer placement, you’ll get the opportunity to work in a department relevant to your degree subject so you can start putting theory into practice. You can expect to work on current projects where you’ll have real input and learn how to work safely in a workplace environment.

What you’ll need

  • To be in Year 3 (or above) in your studies of a relevant degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • To be able to satisfy the MoD’s security requirements (you may need to complete a medical assessment)

Marine – Energy and Marine – Rosyth (Nuclear Safety Engineer)

What you’ll be doing

We will give you a broad education in all areas of nuclear safety engineering. This could involve working on several projects, and training with safety case authors, human factors consultants, engineers of all disciplines, radiation protection advisors and specialists in assessing shielding requirements. There will also be opportunities to work with other specialists, such as environmental management. Your work will support the safe construction, operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities and Royal Navy submarines.

Marine – Energy and Marine – Rosyth (Project Management)

What you’ll be doing

Expect to work on every kind of project across our organisation – from design to construction, in-service support and maintenance and capability enhancement projects. Whatever the task at hand, risks need to be identified and managed, stakeholder requirements satisfied, and the whole assignment planned and delivered on time and to budget. Along the way, you’ll develop strong relationships with colleagues in engineering, commercial, financial and procurement functions. That’s because watching our finances is as important as watching the clock when delivering a project. With that professional network behind you, you’ll have everything you need to tackle anything that comes your way.

Marine – Energy and Marine – Rosyth (Advanced Manufacturing)

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be involved in high-integrity, complex engineering, as well as digitisation and other technologies for future projects and customers. You’ll collaborate with our production engineering and technical services teams, with a particular focus on modern manufacturing techniques, processes and advances associated with Industry 4.0 (Automation, IoT/Interconnection of devices, Smart Sensors, Real-time Data Capture and Analytics, Virtual/Augmented Reality, etc.).

During the summer placement, you’ll get the opportunity to work in a department relevant to your degree subject so you can start putting theory into practice. You can expect to work on current projects where you’ll have real input and learn how to work safely in a workplace environment.

What you’ll need

Marine – Marine Engineering & Systems – Rosyth (Innovation & Technology)

What you’ll be doing

At our Rosyth site, we’re specialists in the design, engineering and construction of complex marine platforms, and are one of the leading technology and innovation organisations in the UK. You will be involved in innovation initiatives across a broad range of disciplines, from design, supply chain, to manufacturing or even IT. As long as you are bursting with ideas and enthusiasm, we’ll have something for you to get your teeth into.

What you’ll get out of it

During the summer placement, you’ll get the opportunity to work within our Innovation team, so you can start putting theory into practice. You can expect to work on current projects where you’ll have real input and learn how to work safely in a workplace environment.

What you’ll need

  • To be in Year 3 (or above) in your studies of a relevant degree in Engineering or Computer Science
  • To be able to satisfy the MoD’s security requirements (you may need to complete a medical assessment)
