About the programme

Getting things to happen how they should, when they should, and within budget is both a science and an art. On this programme you’ll learn exactly how it’s done. The programme lasts two to four years (depending on local business needs) and will empower you to meet the Association for Project Management (APM) framework and work towards project management chartership. Over the course of the programme you will be developed through placements on real projects, assignments, formal qualifications, and you will receive mentoring from some of the top project professionals in the engineering sector.

Project Management at Babcock

Expect to work on every kind of project across our organisation – from design to construction, in-service support and maintenance and capability enhancement projects. Whatever the task at hand, risks need to be identified and managed, stakeholder requirements satisfied, and the whole assignment planned and delivered on time and to budget. Along the way, you’ll develop strong relationships with a range of colleagues in areas such as: engineering, commercial, financial and procurement functions. That’s because watching our finances is as important as watching the clock when delivering a project. With that professional network behind you, you’ll have everything you need to tackle anything that comes your way.

What you'll need

  • A 2:1 Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
  • To be able to satisfy the MoD’s , and our customer’s security requirements (you may need to complete a medical assessment)
  • To have strong numeracy, literacy and communication skills

Where you'll be based

See below to find out more about the areas of our business that are offering places on our Project Management programme for Autumn 2022. You’ll build your experience through placements across our UK business. That’s why we ask all our graduates to be flexible and willing to move during their programme.

Cavendish Nuclear is the UK’s leading nuclear services company, delivering complex projects across the nuclear lifecycle. Our work includes supporting delivery of new-build nuclear power plants, extending the working life of existing nuclear plants and safely decommissioning legacy sites. We’re looking for graduates with a wide range of qualities, including high technical skills, good interpersonal skills and a willingness to learn and adapt to new circumstances.

You could be based in a number of locations, so you will need to be ready and willing to move throughout your programme. You’ll probably call Warrington, Bristol, Leicester or Newbury home, but you could also work from client sites (including nuclear power stations, or Sellafield in Cumbria and Dounreay in Scotland).

Our Land sector provides vital support for civil and military customers’ large-scale fleets of vehicles and equipment. And we deliver high quality technical training to upskill our clients’ workforce. Whilst we have locations throughout the UK, graduates tend to be based in our Greater London, Midlands or Scottish locations, though you will need to be ready and willing to move to other sites throughout your programme.

We operate in challenging, and often highly regulated environments, providing engineering services that are critical, complex and often bespoke. Our graduates have the opportunity to work across multiple industries in the sector, gaining valuable insight into how we help different customers to overcome their particular challenges.

Our Marine – Defence business, based in Bristol, forms a critical part of Babcock’s Marine organisation. Working across a range of exciting design, manufacture and support projects, our 1,500-strong team operate from a number of sites across the UK and internationally ensuring our global customer portfolio is always supported.

Your home base will be Bristol, but some of your placements may be at other Marine sector locations.

Our business in Keynsham is a key strategic partner to our customers — the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by sustaining the submarines with updates, design and documentation, upgrades and overhauls. We are developing innovative Operations Centres, novel repair techniques, technology insertion programmes, predictive data analytics and visualisation and training aids using games engine technologies.

Your home base will be the Keynsham office in Bristol, but some of your placements may be at other locations.

Our business in Plymouth supports the UK Royal Navy in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and sustaining critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

Depending on your programme, your home base could be Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth. However, some of your placements may be at other Nuclear or Marine sector locations.

At the heart of our Marine sector is our 320 acre Rosyth facility, which is home to one of the largest waterside manufacturing and repair facilities in the UK. At Rosyth we specialise in the design and engineering of complex marine platforms, we support clients with design at whole ship or module level and we bring energy to our customers projects with our integrated design and manufacturing approach. . We work together to ensure navies at home and across the world go to sea safely and are the lead contractor for the UK Submarine Dismantling Programme.

Digital transformation is at the heart of the site’s growth. This is not just a vision for the future but it is now a reality through the Type 31 Frigate programme where further investment in facilities and manufacturing equipment will support the integration of technology and new working practices to create a dynamic, effective and efficient, digitally enabled facility.

To make the most of the opportunities Marine has to offer, you’ll need to have great technical skills along with the drive and aspiration to develop your career to help us deliver our world-class programmes, develop new technologies and offer solutions for our vast range of customers.

Your home base will be our Rosyth facility, however, some of your placements may be at other Marine sector locations, therefore you will need to be ready and willing to move to other sites throughout your programme.
