Naval Architecture at Babcock

The activities in this area are many and varied. You might be helping us design a variety of cutting-edge floating vessels and structures, or investigating the finer points of resistance, propulsion and access. What’s certain is that you’ll work with – and learn from – some of the most respected naval architects in the world. You’ll learn how to analyse and design various aspects of floating vessels and structures (including hull form, arrangement, stability, structures, resistance, propulsion and access). In the process, you’ll make a real contribution to projects too. Previous graduates here have worked on everything from naval ships and submarines to small boats and offshore platforms. They have helped us develop unmanned surface vessel support solutions and even been involved in next generation submarine pre-concept engineering.

What you'll need

  • A 2:2 BEng (Hons) degree accredited by RINA/IMarEST is desirable
  • To be able to satisfy the MoD’s, and our customer’s security requirements (you may need to complete a medical assessment)

What you'll get

When you’re part of the team at Babcock, we think it’s only right that you’re properly rewarded for the contribution you make and the hard work you put in. That’s why, in addition to a highly competitive salary, you can look forward to generous pension and employee share schemes, and a whole host of other flexible benefits. These include things like access to our healthcare cash plan, Wellbeing Centre and discounts on everything from gym membership and travel to retail, dining and entertainment. You’ll also have the chance to get involved in our STEM outreach and volunteering activities, which our graduates find incredibly rewarding in all sorts of other ways.

Where you'll be based

See below to find out more about the areas of our business that are offering places on our Naval Architecture programme for Autumn 2022. But no matter which team you join, you could be based anywhere in the UK. That’s why we ask all our graduates to be flexible and willing to move during their programme.

Our business in Plymouth supports the UK Royal Navy in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and sustaining critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

Depending on your programme your home base could be Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth. However, some of your placements may be at other Nuclear or Marine sector locations.

Our business in Keynsham is a key strategic partner to our customers — the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by sustaining the submarines with updates, design and documentation, upgrades and overhauls. We are developing innovative Operations Centres, novel repair techniques, technology insertion programmes, predictive data analytics and visualisation and training aids using games engine technologies.

Your home base will be the Keynsham office in Bristol, but some of your placements may be at other locations.
